11AM - 6PM - IAN TILTON AT STROON
COST : £0
40 Thomas St, Northern Quarter, M4 1ER
From his world famous photo of Kurt Cobain's tearful release of energy backstage in 1990, Iggy Pop well near booting the camera out of Tilton's hands, to images of Manchester's pop and rock glitterati, Tilton's pictures ooze warmth, beauty and the visceral power of great Rock 'n' Roll. Now at Stroon Gallery in Manchester's Northern Quarter, Tilton is opening his vast archive of Stone Roses photos to public view, alongside Nirvana and never-before-seen photos of a youthful Oasis. It's an archive that chronicles an amazing period in music's history; 'Madchester', Grunge, Brit-Pop and all those bits in-between when genres nibbled at each other. Professional yet maverick, Tilton is widely recognised as one of the best on the scene.
11AM - 5PM - EMEK RETROSPECTIVE
COST : £0
59 Thomas St, Northern Quarter, M4 1NA
Winner of the prestigious Pollstar poster of the year award 3 years running, the music industries award for all rock and concert posters. Emeks politically charged intricate posters have made him the leader of the new generation of rock poster artist. The Emek art show will provide a rare opportunity to see old long sold out and unavailable posters and original drawings, along with variants from emeks own personal collection. There will also be a number of Emek original paintings available. He has designed posters for everyone from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, The Verve, Tool, Nick Cave and many more. In Emeks posters, psychedelic 60s imagery collides with 90s post-industrial iconography. To this collision of the organic vs. the mechanical worlds he adds humour, social commentary and fantasy. Even in the smallest details there are messages.
